Accra, May 6, GNA- Reverend Ray Johnson, the Director of Victory International Foundation, an Accra based non-governmental organisation, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Foundation towards supporting Street Academy, a child development centre in Accra.
Reverend Johnson said the move formed part of the Foundation’s vision to ensure that the “God given talents of children” were fully harnessed and nurtured to help them realise their potentials for the development of their lives.
The Director was speaking with the Ghana News Agency at the weekend when he visited the training centre to observe its progress and to chart the roadmap for new support initiatives being fashioned by the Foundation for the Academy.
Last year, the Foundation donated an amount of GH¢10,000.00 to the Academy to assist in the enrolment of 27 children into formal education.
“We are helping to reduce ‘streetism’ which breeds armed robbery and other social vices. Since 1995, we have remained committed to helping less privileged children to develop themselves.
“Some of our beneficiaries are now degree holders, others have attained doctorate degrees,” Mr Johnson said.
Mr Ataa Lartey, Chief Executive Officer of Street Academy, commended the Foundation for its continued support and pledged to use every dime donated by the Foundation for the welfare of the children.
“The Foundation has promised to build for us a new hostel, once we get a land. I am very thankful for all the support.”
Established in 1986, the Street Academy continues to provide formal and informal education to underprivileged children between the ages of 10 and 17.
Every year, the talent development centre admits more than 90 children into its Special, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes.
The Academy assists street children with no parental guidance to help them identify their talents in various areas including sports and culture.
Joseph Agbeko, the nation’s famous boxer, was trained and nurtured by this institution.
