Alavanyo (V/R), Dec. 6, GNA - The Alavanyo enclave in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region has been selected for development into a tourism centre, Mr Teddy Ofori, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has said.
He said the Municipal Tourism Planning Committee identified the area as strategic for tourism development to open up the Municipality for rapid socioeconomic development.
Mr Ofori said this when Mama Awanyo I, Queenmother of Alavanyo Deme, donated furniture to the Alavanyo D.D. Basic School.
He said the Bui Power Authority had expressed interest in harvesting electricity from the Sasadi waterfalls at Abenyinase in Alavanyo, which would also serve educational purposes in addition to its tourism offer.
Mr Ofori also said a sculpture of the first woman to be crowned Miss Ghana, who hailed from Alavanyo would be erected on cave structure at Dzogbedze, where her grave lies.
He further said the cave would be re-engineered for tourist activity, and that an array of tourism products would be added to convert the area into a haven for hikers and adventure seekers.
The MCE said the project would stimulate the development of new hospitality facilities such as restaurants, hotels, shopping and recreational centres.
Mr Ofori said Alavanyo, dotted with mountains and lush vegetation, has had its development impinged by decades of conflict with neighbouring Nkonya, adding that it is the resolve of the Assembly to reposition the traditional area for growth.
The MCE said sanitation remains a challenge to the dream and announced a deadline for households without toilets in the Municipality to comply.
He said public toilets would soon be banned and charged residents including those living in the diaspora to support the construction of household toilets.
