Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has described the Democracy Cup as a true “concept of unity,” emphasizing its role in bringing Ghanaians together through football.
The second edition of the Democracy Cup is scheduled for September 5, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, where Accra Hearts of Oak will lock horns with city rivals Accra Great Olympics in a much-anticipated derby.
As part of activities leading to the game, Mr. Djietror presented the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces, a symbolic gesture that underscores the national character of the event. He stressed that the Cup is about more than football, highlighting its broader contribution to nation-building.
“We see a concept of unity of purpose, characterizing this process. Unity of purpose is so essential; for developing, for building, for achieving excellence. With this in mind, the Speaker led the process and we launched the Democracy Cup,” he stated.
Launched in 2024 under the leadership of Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, the Democracy Cup is designed to use the unifying power of football to promote civic education and strengthen Ghana’s democratic values.
Organisers hope the tournament will evolve into a symbolic national tradition, blending sport and governance to inspire both unity and active participation in the democratic process.
