Algeria forward Mohamed Amoura has issued a public apology after his goal celebration in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 sparked widespread condemnation for mocking a popular Democratic Republic of Congo supporter.
The incident occurred after Algeria's dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over DR Congo on Monday. Amoura, who plays for German club Wolfsburg, was captured on video imitating the iconic, statuesque pose of Congolese superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladingaâknown as "Lumumba"âbefore falling to the turf in a gesture seen as taunting the opposition's elimination.
The fan's persona pays tribute to Dr Patrice Lumumba, a seminal figure in Africa's fight against colonialism, making the celebration particularly sensitive. Facing a swift backlash online and from football fans, Amoura took to Instagram to explain his actions.
"I want to make one thing clear: at that moment, I had no idea what the person or the symbol present in the stands represented," Amoura wrote. "I just wanted to tease, in a light-hearted spirit, with no ill intentions or desire to provoke anyone."
He expressed regret for any misunderstanding, stating, "I respect Congo and their team. Honestly, I wish them the best... If my behavior was misunderstood, I sincerely regret it, as it was never my intention."
Amoura concluded by refocusing on the tournament, writing, "I’m staying focused on the pitch and on representing my country with pride." Algeria will now prepare for their quarter-final match following the controversial win.
