He says the FA’s caretaker body which renewed Appiah’s mandate to cover this year’s Africa Cup of Nations should either renew the national coach’s contract or terminate it and begin the search for his successor as soon as practicable.
Alternatively, the straight-talking coach has advocated the formation of “a sort of consortium of knowledgeable, respected and experienced local coaches” among whom an acting coach could be appointed to re-organise the Black Stars pending the appointment of a substantive head coach for the team.
“ If there is no one in mind to replace him, renew his contract for him to start work immediately. We need to assemble a team capable of winning laurels for Ghana in major tournaments,” Sarpong told the Graphic Sports Online in an interview.
The man, noted for handling perhaps the most number Ghanaian elite clubs, is worried that the NC had been preoccupied with the processes leading to the election of the next GFA President and Executive Council members that it had put on the back burner other important issues, including the Black Stars coaching job, which was citrical for the reorganisation of the national team after their disappointing AFCON campaign in Egypt.
“The over-concentration on the upcoming GFA elections is to the detriment of important issues as the Black Stars coach job, as that was affecting their FIFA rankings because they have not been engaging in international friendlies to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers,” lamented coach Sarpong.
“Now that all attention is on the GFA elections, nobody cares about the national team’s preparations for international assignments.”
Until recently the assistant coach of the national U-20 team, Black Satellites, Sarpong noted that without adequate preparations for international assignments, nothing good would come from the Black Stars in competitive matches.
”The situation is precarious, and I believe the uncertainty surrounding the headship of the coaching job of the Black Stars has also contributed to this sad state.”
“The coach doesn’t know his fate and for that matter, will not make any preparations for a call-up or otherwise”.
He noted that any late reorganisation of the national team after their poor AFCON campaign a few months ago could affect their performance in competitive matches. Read Full Story
