The Former Bishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Right Rev Prof Osei Sarfo-Kantanka says Ghana and Africa in general are not sanitation conscious, a development, he said, is thwarting the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sarfo-Kantanka has, therefore, called for inclusion of sanitation and hygiene in the curriculum of schools across Ghana to address the challenge.
According to him, people are excreting into polythene bags and discharging them into gutters. “We dress nicely and go to church, but Ghanaians are not health conscious,“ he said.
Preaching the sermon on a Kumasi-based KessbenFM, the Weslyan prelate mentioned that Ghanaians are not serious about sanitation issues and that we should learn from the outbreak of Covid-19 as country.
Prof Osei-Sarfo Kantanka regretted that had it not been the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ghana, markets across Ghana would not have been fumigated.
He told the listeners that, the fight against the pandemic should not only be left to the president alone, adding that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) must join the fight.
He lauded President Akufo-Addo for lifting the partial lockdown on Greater Kumasi, Accra and Kasoa.
Whilst he prayed that God should help Ghana to be disease and health conscious, he asked God to keep granting President Akufo-Addo wisdom as he leads the country to defeat the covid-19 pandemic.
In an advice to the seat of government, Bishop Osei-Sarfo Kantanka appealed to Akufo-Addo to let families bury their deceased relatives because the morgues are getting full, which is a health hazard.
He said “The way we go about with issues about the dead must change.”
On re-opening of churches in Ghana, Prof Kanatanka asked the president to meet church leaders and fashion a way out.
“Allow us to go to church but practice social distancing”, he suggested.
Refuting claims that Ghana has defied directives of World Health Organisation (WHO), he asked Ghanaians to stop politicisng the decision by the president to lift the partial lockdown.
Bishop Kantanka also asked the president not to sit down for the educational calendar to be disrupted, adding “Find a way to let the students sit their final examinations. Clear those who are supposed to write their exams else you will disrupt a lot of things.”
