The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) is mourning the sudden passing of the Mayor of the Assembly, Anthony Kurentsir Sam.
The Mayor was transferred from the Effia-Nkwanta Government Hospital in Sekondi to the University of Ghana Medical Hospital where he was pronounced dead late Friday afternoon.
The cause of his death, as confirmed by the President in his address to the nation on Sunday, was a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The personal driver of the Mayor is said to have infected the latter with the virus after he tested positive.
News of some of the staff of the STMA testing positive to the virus went viral, but the Assembly kept denying and parrying questions from journalists until the Mayor succumbed to the virus last Friday.
For now, the management of the STMA has, in a statement, officially announced the death of the Mayor.
Giving details, the statement said the Mayor was admitted at the Effia-Nkwanta Government Hospital on Saturday June 8, where he received medical treatment and subsequently referred to the University of Ghana Medical Hospital on Sunday July 7th for further attention.
The statement said “the Assembly will in due course release to the public the burial and funeral arrangements, as well as his profile.
“In the meantime, we urged the good people of Sekondi-Takoradi, and Ghana as a whole, to remember the family of our departed Mayor in prayers, as they go through this difficult moment.”
The statement, however, urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage and comments on the death of the Mayor, and thus respect the confidentiality of the family and STMA staff medical records.
The President, in his address to the nation, extended his condolences to the family of the late Mayor.
