The Western Regional House of Chiefs (WRHC) has appealed to the Chieftaincy Minister, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, to conduct a thorough investigation into the conduct of the Registrar of the House, who is being accused of fuelling chieftaincy disputes in the region.
The investigation should also include what the House describes as ‘dirty role’ the Registrar, Samuel Owusu Bempong, played in fueling chieftaincy disputes, particularly in the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area.
The Omanhene of Nsein Traditional Area, Awuale Agyefi Kwame, on behalf of the House, extended the request to the Chieftaincy Minister when the latter, together with two other Ministers, paid a visit to the House on Monday.
Kojo Kum, Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Kwabena Okyere Darko, Chieftaincy, Energy and Western Regional Minister respectively were in the house on Monday to confer with the chiefs.
At the meeting, Omanhene of Wassa Akropong, Tetreteh Okuamuah Sekyim, could not perform his duty as president of the House because of injunction restraining him from doing so.
It would be recalled that a Sekondi High Court annulled the election of Tetretteh Okuamuah Sekyim as president of the House on grounds of irregularities.
The Court consequently ordered for a fresh election. Okuamuah Sekyim has consequently filed an appeal at the Appeal Court challenging the Sekondi High Court order.
Pouring out his sentiment at the meeting, Agyefi Kwame recounted to the chieftaincy Minister how the Registrar of the House allegedly fuelled the chieftaincy dispute in Wassa Fiase.
For this reason, the House would want the Minister to hurriedly transfer the Registrar and at the same time cause investigation into the role he played in the Wassa Fiase chieftaincy dispute. Agyefi Kwame assured the Minister that he was ready to provide him with evidence to that effect.
“Samuel Bempong is the cause of chieftaincy disputes in the region and he must be transferred. Transferring him, you must also investigate the dirty role he played in fueling the Wassa Fiase chieftaincy dispute’, a worried Agyefi Kwame told the Minister in Fante language
He recalled how the Registrar reportedly defied the House’s Judicial Committee on it ruling.
“He can solely sit in his office, shut the door and gazette his preferred chief in defiance of the Judicial Committee order,” he said.
This conduct of the Registrar, among others, is the reason why the House would want the Minister to investigate and transfer him.
The House, through the Omanhene, however, assured the Minister that it was ready to work with him, provided he listens to them.
Speaking in a telephone interview for his side of the story, the Registrar told this reporter he was not going to comment, considering that the allegations raised by the Omanhene were going to be investigated.
‘The matter is with the Regional Minister so I will not comment’. However, he said as a Registrar, who has five years to retire, he had worked under instructions. He considered the accusation against him as one of the occupational hazards.
