The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of youth insubordination and drug abuse in Ghana, urging government collaboration to address these pressing issues.
Speaking through a representative at the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the Independence Square, the Chief Imam warned that disrespect toward teachers, reckless behaviour during sports events, and general indiscipline among students are worrying signs for the nation’s future leadership.
“Some students are able to beat up their own teachers, slap and attack them… Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. What kind of leaders are we building?” the Imam asked, highlighting the urgent need to restore discipline in educational institutions.
He also sounded the alarm over drug abuse, particularly within the Muslim community, noting that addiction and involvement in the drug trade are destroying the youth and weakening the moral fabric of society.
The Chief Imam offered to partner with government agencies on programs to combat indiscipline and substance abuse, emphasizing that public education, law enforcement, and mentorship could be part of a collaborative strategy to safeguard the next generation.
Road safety was another area of concern. As the patron and ambassador of road safety in Ghana, the Chief Imam noted the reckless riding of motorbikes by some young Muslims during celebrations, which intimidates bystanders and poses a public hazard. He urged authorities to enforce traffic laws and partner with religious leaders to promote responsible behaviour.
Despite the concerns, the Chief Imam also expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his personal gestures and support over the years, describing the President’s actions as a model of filial responsibility and kindness.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, provided the platform for the Chief Imam to highlight the need for moral guidance, civic responsibility, and youth mentorship, stressing that addressing these challenges is critical for Ghana’s stability and the development of its future leaders.
