Nana Ewiamale VI, chief of Akwidaa Industrial Town in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, has expressed worry over the deplorable state of the only bridge linking five adjoining communities in the area.
The wooden bridge, constructed through self-help, has been in a bad state for some time now, posing danger to lives, and all the calls to local authorities to construct a new one for the community had fallen on deaf ears.
”I, therefore, appeal to the government, as a matter of urgency, to come to the aid of the community by constructing a concrete bridge to replace the existing, which is at the brink of collapse,” he said.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times in Takoradi on Saturday, Nana Ewiamale explained that, the unworthy state of the bridge had become a worry to residents of the five communities.
“The bridge does not only serve the people of New Town but also, Akwidaa Old Town, Bebianeha, Ketaako, Ayinimu, Nyame Bekyere Gardens, and Ahona Beach,” he said.
According to Nana Ewiamale, the poor state of the bridge was and continued to be a major hindrance to productivity as it served as a disincentive for investors, and a threat to human lives as members of the community fear it might collapse anytime soon.
He added that “vulnerable people in the town, like children and the elderly, find it difficult to walk on the bridge and sometimes, out of fear and panic school children have to return home for their safety.”
The assemblyman for the area, Cosmos Kwoffie, said many approaches had been made by him and the council of the town to several government bodies and agencies for support but none had been fruitful.
He said on April 18, this year, the attention of the district assembly was drawn to the precarious nature of the bridge, and officials from its works and feeder roads departments were sent to inspect and report accordingly.
