Ghanaian defender Kelvin Boateng powered in a first-half header as Austria Wien were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Rapid Wien in the Vienna derby.
Boateng scored with a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the center of the goal in the 34th minute, sending the Generali Arena into celebration and giving Austria a deserved lead.
Rapid had dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances before the interval, with Austria compact and dangerous on the break. The hosts looked in control for long spells after the restart, yet a flurry of substitutions from the visitors shifted the momentum late on.
Ercan Kara eventually broke Austria’s resistance in the 83rd minute, finishing from close range after Bendegúz Bolla’s low cross from the right, denying Boateng and his side a statement derby victory. Still, Boateng’s display underlined his growing influence this season, with the 26-year-old now on 14 Austrian Bundesliga appearances and 2 goals in the 2025/26 campaign.
Austria Wien will look to build on this resilient performance when they host Salzburg in their next league fixture on Sunday, April 19.
