Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has announced a major financial and logistical support package for clubs ahead of the new domestic football season.
Speaking at the 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Okraku reaffirmed the GFA’s commitment to reducing the financial pressure on clubs while improving the organisation and competitiveness of the country’s domestic competitions.
The support will cover both the Division One League (DOL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), with the Football Association taking responsibility for a number of key expenses while providing direct financial and equipment assistance to participating clubs.
GFA to support 48 Division One League clubs
For the Division One League, the GFA will continue to pay the fees of referees and Match Commissioners throughout the season.
In addition to covering those costs, each of the 48 clubs participating in the competition will receive GHS 120,000 from the Football Association.
The clubs will also be provided with 30 footballs each to support their training and match preparations.
The overall package for the Division One League represents an investment of approximately GHS 16,244,151.25 by the GFA.
The intervention is expected to provide important financial relief to clubs competing in the second tier, where teams often face significant expenses associated with matchday operations, player welfare, transportation and other logistical requirements.
By absorbing refereeing and Match Commissioner fees and providing direct financial assistance, the GFA hopes to create better conditions for clubs to focus on their sporting responsibilities.
Continued support for Women’s Premier League
The Women’s Premier League will also receive substantial assistance from the Football Association as part of efforts to strengthen women’s football in the country.
Okraku announced that the GFA will continue to cover the fees of referees and Match Commissioners for the competition.
Each of the 20 WPL clubs will also receive GHS 100,000 in financial support, alongside 30 pairs of football boots.
The package will further include fuel support from Melcom and Goil, giving clubs additional assistance with their transportation and operational needs during the season.
The financial and logistical interventions are aimed at helping WPL clubs manage their expenses while creating a more conducive environment for players and officials.
The GFA’s continued support for the women’s competition also forms part of its broader efforts to improve the standard and sustainability of women’s football in Ghana.
Clubs investing in matchday facilities
Okraku also praised clubs for investing their own resources into improving their home venues and matchday facilities.
He said he was encouraged by the improvements being made by clubs across several areas of their stadium and matchday infrastructure.
“I am particularly encouraged by the significant investments made by clubs in upgrading their match venues and facilities,” he said.
The GFA president noted improvements in areas including dressing rooms, spectator facilities, security infrastructure, sanitation, media facilities and other important matchday requirements.
According to Okraku, the improvements are helping to create football venues that are safer, more professional and more welcoming for everyone involved in the game.
The upgrades are expected to benefit players, coaches, match officials, supporters, journalists and commercial partners who attend domestic matches.
With clubs investing in their facilities while the GFA provides financial and logistical assistance, the association believes the two approaches can contribute to raising the overall standard of Ghanaian domestic football.
The latest support package therefore represents a combination of direct financial assistance, equipment provision, operational support and infrastructure development.
As Ghana prepares for another season of domestic football, the GFA says the interventions are intended to ease the burden on clubs while creating better conditions for competitive and professionally organised leagues.
